TL;DR: The ISSA certified personal trainer course costs $868 on promotion, down from $1,068, or twelve interest-free payments starting at $49. It takes about three to six months. The most important decision isn't price, but which of the two exams you take, because only the NCCPT route is NCCA-accredited and some employers require it.
The ISSA certified personal trainer certification costs $868 at the current promotional price, takes roughly three to six months, and is accepted by major gym chains including Equinox, Gold's Gym, Crunch and Life Time.
The decision most guides get wrong is the exam. ISSA offers two, only one of which is NCCA-accredited, and picking the wrong one can cost you a job.
This guide covers what the course actually costs, including fees not in the headline price; how the two exam routes differ; how long certification takes; and whether the credential holds up against the alternatives.
What is the ISSA certified personal trainer certification?
An online, self-paced personal trainer certification from the International Sports Sciences Association, founded in 1988.
The course covers anatomy and exercise science, program design, behavior change, injury prevention, and business and marketing. ISSA states that more than a million people hold its certifications worldwide.
Everything is delivered online. There is no classroom component, no degree requirement, and no fixed start date, which is why many choose it over campus-based alternatives.
Two things set it apart from most competitors. It includes business and marketing modules that other providers charge extra for, and it carries a job guarantee backed by ISSA's employer network.

How much does ISSA certification cost?
The course costs $868 as a one-time payment, discounted from a list price of $1,068 on ISSA's course page. ISSA also offers a twelve-month interest-free payment plan.
Two numbers are worth separating, because guides routinely conflate them. The promotion saves $200 against the list price. Paying once rather than spreading it saves about $193 against the payment plan. Confirm the exact monthly schedule at checkout, since ISSA has changed its plan structure before.
ISSA discounts heavily and often. The $868 figure is a promotional price, and prices have run as low as $599 during past sales, so check the current offer rather than assuming this one.

Three costs sit outside the course fee and catch people out.
The NCCPT proctored exam fee
The accredited NCCPT exam is included with the ISSA CPT course, but NCCPT says Prometric, the testing vendor, charges a separate exam fee whether you test online or at a test center. Budget for it, and check the current amount with Prometric when you schedule.
Specializations
Most ISSA specialization courses cost around $639 each when bought separately, with the Health Coach certification at roughly $950. Bundles work out cheaper if you already know you want one.
Printed textbooks
The digital textbook is included. A physical copy is a separate purchase, which is a recurring complaint in student reviews.
What do the ISSA bundles cost?
ISSA sells the CPT on its own and inside three bundles that add specializations:
- Certified Personal Trainer, the standalone course
- Fitness Coach Bundle, adding one specialization
- Elite Trainer Bundle, adding nutrition plus a specialization
- Master Trainer Bundle, the largest package
Bundle prices move with promotions. Independent reviewers have recorded the full range at roughly $950 to $2,100, depending on the package and the sale running.
What is included in the ISSA certification course?
The fee includes everything you need to sit the exam, which matters because some competitors charge separately for study materials.
ISSA lists the following with the certified personal trainer course:
- Digital textbook and study workbook, searchable and available for life
- Exercise video library and a 3D animation library covering 250 or more movements
- Practice quizzes throughout the course to check understanding
- Client-ready materials, including assessment forms, waivers and progress templates
- A professional website, provided free to help new trainers get found
- Live Zoom sessions with instructors, plus on-demand recordings and Q&A
- Student support from enrolment through to certification
- Both exam options, with the accredited route carrying the separate Prometric fee
The two items people most often expect but do not get are a printed textbook, which is a separate purchase, and a CPR certificate, which is included in most bundles but not all.
Is ISSA certification nationally accredited?
Yes, but only through one of its two exams, and this is the most important thing on this page.
The NCCA, or National Commission for Certifying Agencies, is the independent body that accredits certification programs. Many gyms and employers require an NCCA-accredited credential, and some will not consider applicants without one.
ISSA delivers that accredited exam through NCCPT, an ISSA subsidiary. The exam contains 140 items of which 125 are scored, runs to a two-hour limit, and is not open book. You sit it either at a Prometric test center or by remote online proctoring.
Take the accredited exam unless you have a specific reason not to. It costs more and takes two hours under proctored conditions. The open-book route is easier and leaves you with a credential some employers will not accept.
This also explains a detail buried in most ISSA write-ups. The job guarantee is tied to passing the NCCPT exam, not the open-book one.
How do you become ISSA certified?
Four steps, and you can start any day of the year.
- Check that you qualify. You must be 18 or older and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. No degree or prior experience is required.
- Enroll and start studying. You get immediate access to the course materials. Study is self-paced, online, and available on any device.
- Pass your chosen exam. Either the open-book ISSA exam or the proctored NCCPT-accredited exam.
- Upload a current CPR and AED certificate. This is included free in most bundles or available separately. ISSA's own CPR and AED course takes under an hour.
ISSA issues your certificate once you complete all four.
If you are weighing this against other providers, it helps to look at the market before committing. The demand outlook for personal trainers gives useful context on what the credential is actually worth in the job market.
How long does ISSA certification take?
ISSA states the certification can be completed in as little as three months, and most students finish within three to six months.
The course is self-paced, so the honest answer depends entirely on your study hours. Independent reviewers report that ISSA gives students six months to complete the coursework and exam, extending to eight months if you add specializations.
Treat "four weeks" claims with caution. They describe the theoretical minimum for someone studying full-time, not a typical timeline.
Two things shorten it in practice. Study in fixed blocks rather than whenever you have a spare hour, and sit the exam as soon as you finish the material rather than revising indefinitely. Open-ended revision is where most of the drift happens.
What gyms accept ISSA certification?
Major chains including Equinox, Gold's Gym, Crunch, Life Time, F45, Blink Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness and Anytime Fitness all work with ISSA-certified trainers.
ISSA states it has more than 23,000 hiring partners, and lists these brands directly on its certification page.
The practical answer is that almost all of them will consider it. The complication is accreditation. If a gym specifies an NCCA-accredited certification in its job posting, it means the NCCPT route, not the open-book exam.
A note on the job guarantee
ISSA offers a job guarantee: if you do not receive a job offer after passing the NCCPT exam, it refunds your tuition.
Get the terms in writing before you enroll. ISSA's own site has stated different qualifying windows in different places, 90 days in one and six months in another, and the guarantee is the single most valuable promise attached to the $868. A support ticket asking for the current window, the qualifying conditions, and what counts as a job offer takes five minutes and gives you something dated to refer back to.
Does ISSA certification expire?
Yes. ISSA certifications must be renewed every two years, and renewal requires 20 continuing education units.
You can earn CEUs through ISSA courses or approved outside providers. ISSA offers some continuing education free to its certified trainers, which keeps renewal costs low if you stay within its ecosystem.
Renewal fees differ depending on where your CEUs come from, so confirm the current figure with ISSA at renewal time rather than budgeting from an old guide.
This two-year cycle is standard. NASM, ACE, and most NCCA-accredited providers run the same schedule, so it isn't a point of difference between certifications.
Is ISSA certification worth it?
For most new trainers, yes, particularly if you want to start quickly and train online. It depends on which of the three groups you fall into.
It suits you
If you want a flexible online course, you have no degree in exercise science, you value business training in the curriculum, or you want a job guarantee attached to the credential.
It suits you less
If you want in-person instruction, you are aiming at clinical or athletic performance work where NSCA or ACSM carry more weight, or your target employer specifies a particular certification.
It is a poor fit
If you are choosing the open-book exam to save time. That route produces a credential some employers reject, which defeats the purpose of certifying.
Worth weighing the fee against what comes after it. Certification is the smaller half of the startup cost for anyone going independent, and the full cost breakdown of starting a coaching business covers what else lands in the first year.
Is ISSA a good certification according to students?
Student feedback is strongly positive on flexibility and mixed on depth. ISSA holds a 4.8 rating from more than 7,000 Trustpilot reviews, though that figure moves, so check the current score.
Consistent praise focuses on pace and accessibility. Reviewers repeatedly mention being able to study around full-time jobs and family, and several describe the material as well organized and easy to follow.
The consistent criticism is about materials and depth. One verified student noted the printed textbook was not included and that they had to buy it separately. Others have said the study guide does not closely resemble the final exam, and that navigating the modules is harder than it should be because they are numbered rather than named.
A common view among experienced trainers is that the open-book exam makes the credential easier to obtain than some alternatives. That is a fair criticism of the non-accredited route and another argument for taking the NCCPT exam.
How does ISSA compare with NASM?
ISSA is cheaper, faster and more flexible. NASM carries more recognition in performance and corrective exercise work.
NASM pricing moves with promotions in the same way ISSA's does, so treat that range as directional and check both providers on the day you buy.
Both are NCCA-accredited and both are widely accepted. The choice usually comes down to whether you want a structured methodology to follow, which favors NASM, or a flexible self-paced course with business training included, which favors ISSA.
Decide your exam before you enroll
Work out which exam you need before you pay for anything, because it is the one choice on this page that is hard to undo.
Read three or four real job listings
Pick the gyms you actually want to work at. If any specify an NCCA-accredited certification, take the NCCPT exam. If none do, the open-book route saves you the Prometric fee and two hours of pressure.
Get the job guarantee terms in writing
Submit one support ticket before you pay, asking for the current qualifying window and conditions.
Check today's price, not the one in any guide
Including this one. The gap between sale and list is $200, and ISSA runs promotions constantly.
Decide what happens the week after you pass
This is the step almost nobody plans. A certificate does not bring clients, and the trainers who convert it fastest have already decided whether they are applying to gyms or setting up on their own.
If it is the second, the guide to starting an online coaching business covers the sequence from niche to first client.
The pricing benchmarks tell you what to charge once you have someone to charge, which is the question that arrives about a week later.

Frequently Asked Questions
The course costs $868 as a one-time payment at the current promotional price, against a $1,068 list price, or about $1,061 across a twelve-month interest-free plan starting at $49. Budget an additional Prometric fee if you take the NCCA-accredited NCCPT exam. Specializations bought separately add roughly $639 each.
Yes. ISSA has operated since 1988, and its certification is NCCA-accredited when you sit the proctored NCCPT exam. Major chains including Equinox, Gold's Gym, Life Time and Anytime Fitness recognize the credential. The open-book exam option is not NCCA-accredited, which matters to employers.
ISSA gives students six months to finish the coursework and exam, extending to eight months if specializations are included. Most people complete it in three to six months studying part-time. The course is self-paced with no fixed deadlines inside that window.
No. You must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and provide a current CPR and AED certificate before ISSA issues your certification. No exercise science degree or prior training experience is required, which is one of the main reasons people choose ISSA.
